Key Features

  • Long-lasting – The unique Bastion coating is specifically formulated to enhance gear and hobb longevity by reducing the stress and friction on the gears

  • Precise printsThanks to their hard-wearing coating the hobbs continue to optimally grip the filament long after the stock option would have worn away for more accurate extrusion

  • Designed for use with tougher filaments – Give yourself the flexibility to easily print with abrasive, fibre-filled filaments

  • Improve print quality - Smoother extrusion improves print quality with less defects and a reduced chance of print crashes

  • Reduce maintenance time – The graphite-like carbon bonds in the gear coating keeps them lubricated for longer than the stock option reducing the time needed for maintenance

Print tougher for longer

Equipped with E3D’s exclusive ultra-hard Bastion coating, these precision-engineered hardened-steel extruder gears and hobbs deliver exceptional performance with abrasive and fibre-filled filaments. Expertly crafted for optimised performance, each gear is coated with Bastion - a formulation specifically designed to minimise sliding wear. This reduces stress and friction, allowing the gears to maintain the same load as stock components for up to 70x longer than the stock option. Ideal for those printing with challenging filaments or high-volume users seeking reliable, long-lasting performance from their printer.

Gears that go the distance

The unique coating on these gears and hobbs is thinner than a human hair but packs a serious punch! Its exceptional combination of low friction and high hardness ensures long-lasting performance without compromising extrusion quality. With a 10–15% increase in load-carrying capacity compared to uncoated or stock options, these gears push through even the toughest filaments without frequent replacements.

Close-up photos showing our Bastion coated hobbs and the factory fit/stock Bambu Lab hobbs.  Both used hobbs went through 12 months equivalent of printing with at least 20kg of fibre-filled material, 10kg of glow in the dark along with all the standard test materials you’d expect.

Buttery-smooth extrusion time and time again

Stock hobb teeth get significantly worn down over time, reducing grip and print accuracy. Bastion coated hobbs maintain their performance for hundreds of hours. Enjoy consistent, precise extrusion, fewer clogs and jams, and smoother filament flow for cleaner prints with minimal artifacts or layer lines.

Less maintenance, more printing

The self-lubricating graphite-like carbon bonds in the coating keeps gears running ultra-smooth, so you spend less time greasing your printer. Even without added oil, they outperform uncoated gears -but a small touch of lubrication every few months keeps them performing at peak efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the gears ever wear?

Yes, given enough time the gears may exhibit wear, but will do so considerably slower than the stock option because their unique coating gives them a significantly higher hardness level. Wear resistance is difficult to quantify due to the numerous variables involved, including base polymer, additive, brand, temperature, and print speed.

Will I ever need to lubricate the gears?

Lubricating the gears will make them last even longer so we recommend that you do this every couple of months, but their self-lubricating coating makes them last longer than the stock option even when run dry

Will the gears improve my print quality?

The combination of precision-machined gears and a coating that stops them from wearing gives users consistent extrusion that stays consistent for longer than the stock option. This helps maintain quality and reduces the chance of unwanted print artifacts and layer lines.
